With more than 14,000 students and 10 faculties, the Hochschule Niederrhein with its campuses in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Its history reaches back to the year 1855 when the „Crevelder Höhere Webschule“ (Advanced Weaving School) was founded, the eldest precursor institution of the Hochschule Niederrhein.
Its profile in education and research links technology with society. Students can make their choice from more than 90 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.
Education with a practical focus
Studying at the Hochschule Niederrhein is characterised in particular by its occupational orientation, as education with a practical focus and applicationoriented research are the guiding principles of the study concept. Numerous cooperation agreements with regional companies guarantee training that is geared to the needs of the labour market.
There are a number of degree programme formats that make it possible to study in different time models. Almost all faculties therefore offer career-integrated, part-time and different types of dual Bachelor’s degree programmes. In the dual Bachelor‘s degree programme theory is combinstudentsed with practicals vocational training. Graduates then obtain a double qualification; a vocational qualification from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and an academic Bachelor’s degree.
As part of selected degree programmes it is also possible to acquire an international double degree with partner universities in France, Finland and China. In addition, students can spend a semester abroad at one of the 100 partner universities.

Research at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences is application-oriented. Our researchers are aware of the immediate benefit of their results. It is therefore only logical that the transfer of knowledge and technologies, in addition to teaching and research, plays a decisive role for us. Two campuses: Krefeld and Mönchengladbach
The two campuses of the Hochschule Niederrhein in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach are about 20 kilometres apart. Both cities belong to the Rhine-Ruhr region with a population of around ten million. Mönchengladbach has 260,000 inhabitants and Krefeld 230,000. Both cities offer a wide range of cultural and sports facilities. They share a theatre ensemble (opera, operetta, musicals, drama and ballet) as well as the Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra. Both cities offer excellent sports facilities and are home to renowned clubs such as the Borussia Mönchengladbach soccer club and the Krefeld Pinguine ice hockey team
Studying in Krefeld
In 1971 the former art and engineering schools merged to create the newly founded Hochschule Niederrhein, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. Central administration and six of the ten faculties are located in Krefeld. While the faculties of Chemistry and Design are located on the West Campus, all other institutions are on the South Campus. The Faculty of Design is now housed in a listed building designed by the famous architect Bernhard Pfau.
Studying in Mönchengladbach
In Mönchengladbach each of the four faculties is located centrally on the
University Campus around Webschulstrasse. The Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology is still housed in the 100-year-old buildings of the former textile engineering school. The mixture of historical buildings and modern, energyefficient architecture such as the NEW-Blauhaus makes the campus so unique and appealing
