Venlo
Venlo is a green and lively historic city on the river Meuse. It’s a city with many surprising hidden sides and it’s full of people who are ambitious and resourceful.
Also, a wide range of art and culture, numerous recreational opportunities and attractive events characterise this city on the German border. And, last but not least, Venlo is the perfect place to enjoy good food and drinks.
With more than 4,500 students from all over the world, the city speaks many languages. Venlo is an attractive city for young people who would like to study here, because of the large amount of events and activities, the beautiful city center with many shops (both modern and nostalgic) and an extensive variety of art and culture. Together, the Fontys college, HAS college and the Campus of Maastricht University offer a wide range of courses focused on logistics, agro-food, health, international business and the manufacturing industry.
Studying in Venlo means studying on a small-scale basis, with personal guidance, unique courses and a good connection to the labor market immediately after graduating, due to intensive cooperation with companies in the region.
Venlo plays an important role in entrepreneurship in the Netherlands and beyond. The region has been repeatedly declared a logistics hotspot in Europe and holds the second largest horticultural area in the Netherlands. Various manufacturing companies that play an important role on a global scale are represented in the manufacturing industry here. You can safely call Venlo a city with a very entrepreneurial character.
In Venlo, people like to take charge, work together and there is a real winner mentality when it comes to entrepreneurship, both in medium-sized and large companies. Every year, many entrepreneurs and companies win national and international awards for customer service and inventiveness.
The ‘Markt’, the square in front of the beautiful 14th century city hall, is the center of Venlo where you will find many bars and restaurants. From here, you walk into the winding streets of the old town, with its quaint shops and cozy restaurants.
Also, the newer part of the city center, the ‘Maasboulevard’, is just a short walk away. Well-known chains and brands can be found here in abundance.
If the shops have long been closed, there is still plenty to do in the city center of Venlo. Every season, Venlo is brimming with cultural activities, events and traditions. You can enjoy the best free festivals and check out blockbusters or arthouse gems. Two cinemas, a theater, a pop temple and a church converted into a cultural stage guarantee a broad cultural program.
Many bars and restaurants offer special evenings and student discounts. Whether you want to dance all night, hang at the bar in a cozy pub or perhaps drink tasty wines and cocktails in a wine bar; everything is possible.
Those who stay in Venlo a bit longer will be surprised at the amount of greenery in and around the city. Maasduinen National Park is located at the northern border and on the German side there is a contiguous nature reserve that is larger than National Park De Hoge Veluwe (one of the largest national parks in the Netherlands)! The river Maas flows past the city center and nature reserve ‘De Peel’ starts at the western border.
Venlo has had city rights for over 675 years, but long before that people already lived here. With the water of the river Maas as a vital lifeline, the city became an important intersection of waterway and country road.
In the Middle Ages, Venlo was an important trading city and therefore a popular target for invaders. In the past, Venlo was occupied by the Spanish and French inquisition. After
