Mönchengladbach
Mönchengladbach, with its 270,000 inhabitants the largest city between the Rhine and the Meuse, is particularly attractive as an economic location for many industries thanks to its central location in the center of Europe. It is not far from the Ruhr area, the metropolitan cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne and the Benelux countries. From here you can reach about 15 million consumers within a radius of 100 km!
This favorable location is characterized by an excellent transport infrastructure with four highways, two central train stations, its own airport and the proximity to international airports and inland and sea ports.
After a joint location analysis by the WFMG (Wirtschaftsförderung Mönchengladbach) and Hochschule Niederrhein, six industries have been selected that are of particular interest to Mönchengladbach. Textile & fashion, mechanical engineering, logistics, healthcare, IT & digital economy and the creative industry are the main sectors of WFMG’s focus and these are supported by individual network activities. In addition to these six leading industries, the WFMG also supports other industries that are indispensable for Mönchengladbach: trade, craft, environment, food and gastronomy.
EXCELLENT IN TEXTILE. Mönchengladbach is home to numerous well-known companies in textiles, clothing/fashion, textile machinery and textile logistics. Nowadays, approximately 80 companies from this industry with approximately 3,200 employees work in Mönchengladbach. Thanks to the textile and clothing technology department of Hochschule Niederrhein and the textile and clothing research institute, the local textile industry is well-positioned as a future industry in Mönchengladbach. The main activity of the WFMG in this sector is the young talent- and recruitment fair MG ZIEHT AN – GO TEXTILE!
MG zieht an – go textile! The largest textile fair for young talent in Germany MG ZIEHT AN – GO TEXTILE! is based on an initiative of well-known companies in both textile machinery and textile and clothing technology. It takes place in Europe’s largest training center for the textile industry: the textile and clothing technology department at Hochschule Niederrhein.
With 15 million consumers within a radius of 100 km and an excellent transport infrastructure, Mönchengladbach is the central junction between the Benelux and the Rhine-Ruhr railway. It is for a reason that almost one in six employees in Mönchengladbach works in the logistics industry. But not only the location and the employee potential are decisive; Mönchengladbach also offers expertise in intralogistics and on future topics such as blockchain, automation and digitalised warehouse processes.
From Mönchengladbach, logisticians are expanding the network of various goods and information flows – for the region, the country and far beyond.
LOG4MG
In order to further expand Mönchengladbach as a hub for logisticians, to create a network for local players in the industry and to offer innovative solutions to new logistics companies that want to establish themselves in Mönchengladbach, the WFMG has founded ‘Logistik-Initiative Mönchengladbach’ (LOG4MG).
By organizing network meetings and events on a regular basis and by participating in trade fairs, LOG4MG offers its partners extensive cooperation within the network and a strong marketing position. By participating in the national ‘Tag der Logistik’, the focus is also on attracting young talent.
This logistics forum attracts more than 200 visitors to Mönchengladbach every year. Companies in Mönchengladbach and other partners show their skills at the associated fair.
The growing importance of information technology for business and daily life is clearly noticeable on the Niederrhein. Many companies and start-ups in this industry settle in Mönchengladbach and shape the city of the future with their creative ideas. This is an upward trend, as evidenced by developments in the “Nordpark” business park.
In this context, the WFMG is involved in all kinds of projects and initiatives, such as broadband expansion, to sustainably prepare Mönchengladbach as a location for companies for future issues like “Industry 4.0”.
nextMG
The network association next-mg is committed to advancing digitalisation in Mönchengladbach and promoting activities related to digital transformation. To this end, members pursue three main goals: encouraging and supporting start-ups, promoting digitalisation in business and associated transformation processes, and expanding educational programs, particularly in the area of IT/digitalization.
To actively support transformation processes in the local economy, the association is working on a network of leading industries in Mönchengladbach, such as manufacturing and IT, to jointly master topics related to Industry 4.0. Hoschschule Niederrhein is a co-founder of the association and contributes to strengthening the range of education on a local and

The Mönchengladbach economic region consists of the world-famous ‘hidden champions’ of the manufacturing industry, regarding mechanical and installation technology, electronics, electrical engineering and metalworking and -processing. With process innovations and high-tech products, these companies have ensured that the Mönchengladbach region is an – internationally – established name and knowledge center for mechanical engineering in the manufacturing industry.
In particular, the worldwide active textile machinery and process-oriented plant construction enjoy a high reputation and are characterized by their extensive services – such as individual engineering and rapid prototyping – expertise and specialist knowhow. With approximately 150 industrial partners, they form a strong competence network in the Mönchengladbach industrial and technological region, which offers customers individual industry solutions as system partners in a business platform.
A strongly positioned and differentiated hospital landscape extends far beyond the urban area into the region of Mönchengladbach. In recent years, several medical centers have been established, which has also stimulated the real estate market.
The food producers based in Mönchengladbach not only benefit from their close proximity to consumers, but also from the new accretion of food experts at Hochschule Niederrhein.
Together with the IT sector, the creative industry forms an emerging industry for young professionals in Mönchengladbach. The creative industry in Mönchengladbach defines itself as a cross-sectional industry in the fields of communication, fashion, design, marketing, architecture, art, music and software.
A disproportionately large number of freelancers and small companies are represented in this industry and they all share a common characteristic: ideas and creativity are their main source. The WFMG is developing an infrastructure for creative professionals. In addition to initiating networks, this also includes creating suitable workplaces and developing urban appeal.
