Krefeld
Krefeld – also known as the city of velvet and silk – stands for innovative architecture, vibrant culture and striking design, but above all for a society that dares to take new paths without denying its traditions. Research institutions and companies form a creative network and science is permanently located here.
Application-oriented research is carried out by the Hochschule Niederrhein as well as other research institutes and challenging jobs are there for the taking.
Thanks to a special mix of pioneering spirit, technical achievements and successful entrepreneurship, companies in Krefeld regularly develop into world market leaders.
Today, the city is still shaped by the success of its velvet and silk history, which is clearly reflected in the architecture. In the international architectural world, Krefeld is inextricably linked to the avant-garde architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. For example, the auditorium of the design students at the Hochschule Niederrhein is located in a building of Mies van der Rohe’s student Bernard Pfau, which is popularly called “the Ufo”.
In addition, a new innovation and technology campus is under construction and there are even plans for a coding school. Krefeld is a center for founders; experts and pioneers in the digital and creative industry have found their home here. Krefeld #silkvalley has become a well-known phenomenon.
It’s not only the creative industry that feels at home in Krefeld, the many “new citizens” are also impressed by the diversity in residential areas. The inner city, built partly in Wihelminic architecture, is found particularly attractive.
In Krefeld you can find the right home for every taste: from spacious family homes in quiet green locations, stylish old neighborhoods to loft and penthouse apartments. And if you still can’t find anything suitable here, the local architectural community is happy to offer its services.
Living in Krefeld means access to a distinctive, vibrant and diverse urban culture, reflecting Krefeld’s cosmopolitan and experimental attitude. The cultural offer varies from the small “Kulturrampe” and famous “Kulturfabrik” to numerous theater-, dance- and music festivals.
In addition, there are established cultural institutions such as the art museums, the German Textile Museum, Burg Linn, the Heeder Factory or the City Theatre. Every weekend is filled with plenty of options. New art forms such as “urban art” are also firmly anchored in the city’s cultural offer.
Last but not least, living in Krefeld also means enjoying variety. Embedded in the landscape of the Lower Rhine, there is an extensive range of leisure activities, including hockey (on field or ice), football, tennis, break dance, rowing, sailing and probably surfing soon.
In addition to these sporting and aforementioned cultural activities, you can also visit the Krefeld Zoo or relax in one of the parks or gardens. Not to forget the versatile and multicultural hospitality industry. Spread across the city you will find a wide range of gastronomy options; from eatery to star kitchen.
Krefeld is also the city of short distances: it is only a 20-minute drive to Düsseldorf Airport, 2 hours by train to Frankfurt and 20 hours by freighter to the seaport of Rotterdam.
