I’m a Doctor in Veterinarian Medicine and graduated from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2017. In my first job as a vet, I got involved in food policy designing and worked closely with the regional authorities. That triggered my interest in food management.
More knowledge about food management
I was particularly interested in the public part of veterinarian medicine, the part where policies are made. I wanted to find out about the role a vet can play in public health. That’s when I decided I needed more knowledge about food management. I looked at programmes throughout Europe, and finally opted for this master’s programme for several reasons.
Well-balanced programme
The programme is well-balanced. There is focus on advanced biomedical sciences, but also on food technology, food laws, consumer research. Combined with the management angle, the fact that it’s English-taught and that you have a truly multi-disciplinary programme, made this study programme perfect for me.
Good rankings and reputations
I chose to come to Maastricht because the UM stands out due to its ranking and reputation. In addition, Problem-Based Learning enables you to discover the fields you are good in and where you need to improve. I also like the small groups. The contents of the programme is unique and because it’s very industry-focused with strong links with food companies, it also improves your employability afterwards.
Ambition to improve the population’s health
My ambition is to improve the population’s health by delivering healthier and more sustainable food products. Diet plays a key role in health, since being overweight is a primary risk factor for many non-communicable diseases like diabetes type 2, for example. This master’s programme will equip me with all the tools to contribute to reducing these diseases.
